The EBC welcomes the EU's new NGT regulation

On behalf of our industry partners from across Europe and the wider biosolutions ecosystem, the EBC celebrates the EU's new landmark regulation of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).

On June 17 2026, the European Parliament achieved a final endorsement on new EU rules governing plants produced through NGTs.

This marks a pivotal milestone for Europe’s agri-food sector, unlocking opportunities for innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability across entire value chains. The new regulation establishes a modern framework for NGTs, providing legal certainty for European farmers, plant breeders, researchers, and food producers. These advanced tools in plant breeding enable highly precise and efficient improvements, thereby helping farmers adapt to climate change, reduce reliance on inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, and increase resilience to diseases and pests.

Importantly, the regulation maintains the EU’s high standards of health, food safety, and environmental protection. By strengthening the scientific basis for decision-making, the new rules also ensure transparency, foster trust, and help level the playing field for European operators, while upholding intellectual property and innovation safeguards.

“This regulation sends a powerful signal that Europe is ready to deliver on its ambition for a competitive, sustainable and resilient bioeconomy,” says Pernille Rype Elley, Interim Director of the EBC. “NGTs are not only essential for future-proofing European agriculture, but also reinforce Europe’s role as a leader in innovative, science-based biosolutions.”

Last week's decision marked an important day for our partner organizations and the wider European biosolutions ecosystem.
